La band fu fondata da Maurice White. In oltre quarant'anni di carriera hanno venduto circa 90 milioni di dischi, ricevuto 20 nomination ai Grammy Awards, vincendone 6. Hanno inoltre ottenuto 12 nomination agli American Music Awards, vincendoli 4 volte. Nel 2000 sono stati inseriti nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame e hanno ricevuto una stella sulla celebre Hollywood Walk of Fame di Los Angeles.
