Il nucleo originario della band è formato da Tunde Adebimpe, David Andrew Sitek, Kyp Malone, Jaleel Bunton e Gerard Smith. Quest'ultimo è morto di cancro nel 2011. Inoltre sono numerosi e di diversa estrazione i musicisti che hanno collaborato col gruppo in studio.
